A Queen City Girl: The Pat Rice Story

This documentary from 2009, is about one of the most respected and adored individuals in the Cincinnati music scene.  Through interviews with bands, venue owners, promoters, and local organizers, this documentary explores just who this woman is, and the origins of her curious hobby.  For the past ten years,  65-year-old Pat Rice, AKA Punk Rock Grandma, has been devoutly showing up to local music events around the city.  What started as a passive way to kill time became a way of life, and now, you would be surprised if you could find someone at a bar or venue that DIDN'T know who she was.

Early Life: In Her Own Words

While shooting the documentary, one thing that wasn’t shown enough was Pat's life growing up in Cincinnati.

During production, she was kind enough to bring a photo album to the university to allow us to get scans of her old family pictures, and then spoke to us about them, telling stories and offering context.  While it wasn't quite enough to turn into a full segment in the documentary, it is certainly enough to help one see her childhood, growing up in Cincinnati’s Northside neighborhood, from her own perspective.  I hope you enjoy a little slice of Pat sharing her life with you.

Pat Rice tirelessly contributed to the lives and livelihoods of local Cincinnati musicians for the last two decades.  With her recent, untimely passing, she leaves a legacy of selflessness and genuine care for others in this world.

To ease the financial cost of a proper memorial, Pat's existing family and friends have come forward to humbly ask the music community whom Pat supported night after night, to assist in making sure that Pat has a dignified and long lasting send-off from this life.  The present plan is to lay Pat to rest along side her grandparents and parents in Cincinnati's Spring Grove Cemetery.  We look to raise money to purchase a plot, a modest casket and a headstone.

Any money raised past the direct cost of funeral services will be reserved and contributed towards a foundation that will be created in Pat's name.
